November 2009 PIXELearning and Comcast speak at e-virtuoses
Highlighting a different approach for training technologies Helen led the discussion using ‘Putting Communication Skills to Work’ as her case study, Comcast’s first Serious Game using PIXELearning’s role play engine. Created by PIXELearning, this role play engine provides a means of creating complex life like conversations practiced through a simulation, where conversations can have numerous branches, no straight forward questions or responses, and numerous end points allowing learners to experiment with different approaches to call handling. Providing a motivational introduction in to Comcast’s business, the simulation aimed at new hires allows agents to become familiar with face to face role play. Due to the recent recession James, Vice President of Customer Services at Comcast University, explained “with the increase in Generation X and Millennial hires, new methods of training are needed to attract and motivate the more recent generations, while still catering for Boom and Jones Generations”. Creating something that would cater for a diverse audience, have adaptable content, limited time away from the front line and a move away from traditional role play, was the driving force behind ‘Putting Communication Skills to Work’. The simulation incorporates an animated scene setter to grab the learner’s attention, an avatar that represents the customer to help improve empathy, and also 3 levels of detailed and personalised feedback. e-virtuoses has in its short time dramatically grown in size and interest and in only its second year managed to attract over 500 attendees, up from 140 in its first year. Why? because the government recently invested significantly into the industry thereby increasing the interest and attention of Serious Game designers, developers and sellers globally.
